Enjoy a Shopping Spree at Donki!

Do you want to go on a shopping spree somewhere when you visit Japan? It might be a good idea to go to upscale places like Ginza, Omotesando, Shinjuku, etc. Yeah, sounds like a plan, too!  But sometimes, you might want to look for something unique about Japanese culture?  Then, I’ll tell you a perfect place for you. That place is Donki (ドンキ ), Don Quijote (ドン・キホーテ)  is its official name, and it’s one of the biggest discount stores in Japan. These days, their evolution is unstoppable. I’m going to share very unique items that you may like today. Let’s get started! Oh, before that, I wrote basic information about Donki in my past articles. If you get a chance, please take a look at below.

What is Donki?

10 Must-Buy Items at Donki

1. What is “偏愛 (hen ai)”?

*This trade mark “偏愛” will bring you funny and amazing experiences. You might learn something about different things in Japanese sub-culture.

“偏愛 (hen ai)” means “preference” in Japanese. Donki launched this “偏愛” series of dishes. The motto is “Instead of trying to get a 75% approval score from everyone, we’re trying to get one person’s 120%.” Usually businesses tend to develop their product to meet consumer demand as much as possible. However, it’s impossible to fulfill every consumer’s demand, so they try to meet the demands for 75% in the market. That’s a good marketing strategy, I’d say, but you can’t get big wins because you do things as others do. Sometimes you need to be a pioneer to get big benefits in business. That’s what they do. I’m sharing some dishes here.

きくらげ中華丼 (kikurage chuka don)

*Well, I’ve never seen such a black color as “中華丼 ( chuka don) before. “中華丼” a is Chinese-ish Japanese dish with stir-fried vegetables, quail egg, and pork meat with starch sauce. About 10% of the portion includes vegetables such as きくらげ (kikurage). きくらげ is wood ear mushroom, which is chewy and has a lot of  vitamin D. It’s safe to say that it’s good for your health, isn’t it?

*きくらげ (kikurage) looks like a bit gross, but believe me, it tastes good. It has almost double the vitamin D as boiled liver!

アメリカンドックのここだけ弁当 (chicken rice with only the crispy batter of corn dogs)

*You might think it’s weird that there are people who love to eat only the bottom of corn dogs. It’s the crispy batter without the sausage. It’s a crazy idea to sell this as an official bento dish. The more ridiculous an idea it is, the more curious you are sometimes.

*To be honest, the taste is OK as I expected. It goes well with a beer. Sure, I might have thought that I wanted to have more crispy parts when I was a kid. This dish brings back memories. The person who came up with this is a genius, I’d say.

皮だけのフライドチキン (fried chicken skin without chicken meat)

*I think this product name has a good sense of humor because people think it absolutely comes with chicken meat with the skin when you hear ”fried chicken”, but this menu is only fried chicken skin. I don’t deny that there are a lot of people who like it while drinking beer.

I just introduced some dishes from the series of “偏愛 (hen ai).” If you get a chance, you must try them.

2. Craft Beer of Donki

*The “” trademark is a sign that you must try it.

Craft beers have been booming for years in Japan. Everything from big companies to small breweries are selling their beers now. There are hit or miss. I’m a beer guy who especially loves IPA. I didn’t expect the Donki beers to be any good, but that was a big mistake… These beers can compete with the very best: from Pale Ale, to IPA, and Weizen, to Stout. On top of that, they are affordable. Now I keep these in the fridge as part of my regular inventory. I have to tip my hat to them. If you’re a beer lover, you must try it.

*Finally, recently they launched lager beer and non-alcohol beer at affordable prices.

3. Snacks

*Sometimes, I crave salami sausage. Most of the time, I’m satisfied with the size or the thickness, or both. This one from Donki hits the spot. It’s my guilty pleasure.

*This mixed nuts pack has a funny story. Many businesses refer to customers’ opinions in order to improve their products or services. Previous mixed nuts had a lot of negative reactions, but they never gave up on it because they had confidence in their products. Then, they decided to sell the same recipe by just changing the package color. They also mention on the package that they will stop selling it if the sales are not going well compared to the last time.

*It’s said that a package has an important role in engaging with customers. The “” brand has a lot of comments, appeal, and explanations. It might be a good chance to learn Japanese.

*This is a mixed nuts with cheese snack. The person who is in charge of this product loves cheese snacks, so you must try it if you like nuts and cheese.

*There are many varieties of nuts at Donki. You will definitely find your favorite taste. One of my favorite ones recently is their black pepper flavor.

*Fried sweet potatoes, salty butter flavor. By shaking it after topping it with the flavor, it’s going to be good.

How was that?  Donki renewed this private brand “ド情熱価格” a few years ago. I remember there was one of the run of the mill type of brands that sold at just cheap prices by doing bulk orders. I wasn’t excited about their products. Now they’re bending over backwards to add surprises in their products by listening to every single customer’s voice. That’s what made Donki different from other competitors. Apparently, one of the big advertising companies was involved in renewing this brand, and it was a really awesome job. Donki always looks for surprising products and affordable prices instead of low quality and prices. Oh, just so you know, I don’t get a penny from them. I highly recommend exploring Donki whenever you visit Japan. The unique, appealing packaging might help you study some words for Japanese daily conversation.
